The Texas A&M University-Kingsville® Jazz Combos primarily function to provide students an environment to hone their improvisatory, arranging, and compositional skills in the small group jazz setting. Generally consisting of three or four horns and a rhythm section, these groups focus not only on mastering the art of performing jazz standards but on creating new pieces of music for the genre. The groups continuously pursue fresh sounds by combining different jazz styles or using rhythm and harmony in non-standard ways. Students are constantly encouraged to experiment with new material individually and in rehearsal settings.
